August C., 4th grade
Students in the 4th grade studied the prints of the Japanese artist Hokusai and learned how he utilized color, value and size to develop a sense of distance in his work. Students painted a landscape manipulating color and value to create space. They then took a look at the Japanese art of Sumi-e painting. Sumi-e painters use black ink to make beautiful brush strokes meant to capture the essence of an object. Students used their brush in various ways to create a branch and bird in the foreground of their image. August used thin, delicate lines for twigs and thicker strokes for branches. Overall the picture looks very serene, as her bird seems to be overlooking the sunset. |
